2011: The Retrospect: Top 5 Worst Movies of 2011

And now... for the losers.

Yes, yes. We all know and appreciate the cathartic feel of riffing off the best movies of the year. Nothing can beat it, but there is still some catharsis to be had when focusing on the other end of the spectrum.

There is always room in series like this for the bad, the worse, the awful, the shitty, the diabolical, the unforgivable, the crap, the abominations, the scrawny, little, pathetic pieces of antichrist!!!
...
So, with that in mind, here are Films From the Supermassive Black Hole's picks for the worst films of 2011!!

That's a winning bunch right there.

Allow Me To Call Your Attention To This

So, what with Sucker Punch being the rotting corpse it was, you would not be blamed in the slightest if you were suddenly very worried about Zack Snyder's new film, Superman: Man of Steel. It's human nature.

Now, I am not that worried. Sucker Punch, in my opinion, failed because it was purely from Snyder's mind and he wasn't given any boundaries. No one told him when he went to far or when an idea he had was stupid. Superman is return to his usual tricks, what with it being an adaptation and all.

I'd like to point your focus to an article from Moviefone that I came across on Twitter. A blogging buddy of mine posted it, but I cannot for the life of me remember which one. Anyway, the article makes the case that Snyder will not only do fine with Superman, but that he is, in fact, the perfect director to helm the project.

Stop smiling! You got some repenting to do, you smug bastard!

The article makes the case that Sucker Punch will be a learning experience for Snyder.

"First of all, it's not like is unprecedented in Hollywood. Sucker Punch is Snyder's fifth full-length feature film, and the first that can be considered an all out misfire. In comparison, do you know what Steven Spielberg's fourth film was that hit theatre? 1941. Have you ever seen 1941? It is terrible (though, contrary to popular belief, it did make money. I promise you, patrons who paid their hard earned money to see 1941 were not happy with Mr. Spielberg that day either. What happened next? Spielberg learned, despite success, that not everyone will just magically love everything he throws at the screen. Should Spielberg have been removed from his next project - something called Raiders of the Lost Ark - as a result?"

Full article here.

Personally, I think it's gonna be David Goyer's script and Christopher Nolan's involvement as producer that are going to play the biggest roles in ensuring that the man from Krypton gets his due, but I think the article is on point. Snyder has realized that he's not invincible, and that his style means nothing without substance. Every great director in history has made at least one stinker. No reason to suspect that Snyder would be any different.

The Bad Buzz Was Right!

I am crying bitter, pitiful tears of shame right now, folks. Tears of shame, for I have been led astray. Near the end of my 2010 retrospective, I declared Sucker Punch as my most anticipated movie of 2011. And why wouldn't I? It was an original work by one of my favorite, up and coming directors, boasted incredible visuals and action, and looked to tell a mind bending tale of liberation and sacrifice. Unfortunately, something foul found it's way into the mesh that made up the film, and caused the whole thing to fall apart at the seems. Sucker Punch is a mess, spilling over with one mistake and bad call after another. It's a movie of ambition, but nothing was done to capitalize on this ambition. I don't remember the last time I was so let down by a film. Disappointment, thy name is Sucker Punch!

Strut your stuff. It's the only reason you're here!

All This Bad Buzz

I really hope I respond favorably to it when I see it tonight.

Finger's crossed. Wish me luck!

2010: The Retrospect: Top 5 Most Anticipated of 2011

We're almost done.

What kind of retrospect would this be if I didn't at least touch on what was about to come. In the past, all I've done is list off some movies that would be gracing our presence in the coming year. Well, now, since I'm getting nominated for awards whatnot, I'm going to focus on the year to come with it's very own post! Man. I'm legitimate! Seriously though, 2011 looks like it will answer a lot of cinematic questions, questions regarding superheroes, robots, wizards, and Mel Gibson. These are my Top 5 Most Anticipated Films of 2011!

2010: The Retrospect: Top 5 Trailers

Things are starting to heat up.

Day 3 of 2010: The Retrospect is gonna focus on the most popular part of a film's advertising, the trailer. It's the thing that gets people most excited about upcoming movies, and the aspect of a films production that many film bloggers avoid like it's the plague... or Battlefield Earth. People like going into movies blind, and they have every right to. I, on the other hand, love trailers. Not only do they lovingly tease me with what I'm going to experience, but they also help me decide whether or not I should go see a film. You didn't see a review of Burlesque from me, did you? Maybe its lame trailer had something to do with that. There have been some amazing trailers this year, but only five can make the cut. Sit back. Enjoy.

5. Tron: Legacy (Comic-Con Footage)
It's not an official trailer, doesn't delve into plot at all, and doesn't reveal anyone involved with the film with the exception of Jeff Bridges. But, that's all technicalities. Even though it wasn't played in theaters, this is the one that got me über excited to see the return of Flynn and all that it would bring. It may be cheating, putting Comic-Con footage on my list of best trailers of the year, but, since when have I played by the rules. Got a problem with it? Talk to the caribou outside. He's wise.

4. The Tourist
So, apparently, the movie actually sucked. Well, that's a shame, because this trailer kicks ass. It's kind of awesome, looks cool, and all that, but you all know why I love it. It's the Muse track that's playing in the background. Oh, advertisers. You have a key to my heart, and I love you so! It's a weird thing though. The last film to have a Muse song in its trailer was disappointing as well, despite having talented people working on it. LE GASP!!! Maybe Muse is cursed... Oh, whatever. Here's the trailer.

3. Inception
Oh, please. What did you expect? The most exciting action movie of the year. Of course the trailer would show up on this list. The music is epic! The imagery is epic! It beautifully tickles you with plot elements and character motivation, while still keeping most everything a mystery. For an example of quality advertisement for a pop product, look no further than this.

2. The Social Network (IM Trailer)
This one inches past the competition because of its totally bitchin' idea. No characters are shown. No scenes from the film are shown. Just dialogue, shown via a Facebook chat. That's brilliant. It got me excited for the film, and adequately showed how friggin' boss the dialogue of the film was.

1. Sucker Punch
I could tell you, but why would I do that, when I could show you?

Hope you enjoyed that. Tune in tomorrow for Top 5 Best Scenes of 2010, and be sure to refresh yourself on everything that 2010 had to offer with the Black Hole's 2010: The Retrospect. See you tomorrow kids. Eat your vegetables.

Trailer Trash: Sucker Punch... Again

It's time to root through some trailers. What sorts of wonderful things will be alluded to today?

Good to be back! We had a GREAT run of The Wild Party, but, alas, it is over. Post show depression is hitting me like a mother fucker, but, gotta keep trucking on, right? Luckily, I have a really awesome trailer to write about to pull me out of my funk.

Thanks to this new trailer, I finally have a grasp on what Sucker Punch is actually about. A girl, whose name is apparently Baby Doll (???) is entombed in a mental asylum by her less than loving father after her mother passes away. It's a grueling life in the nuthouse, but, with the help of her compassionate dance teacher (again, ???), Baby Doll learns to escape into her own mind in an elaborate plot to break free from her prison. She enlists the help of four other girls in her quest, and together, they delve into their imaginations to find the things that will set them free, guided along the way by an enigmatic wiseman.

Thoughts on the cast are still the same as last time. Emily Browning looks to kick a whole ton of ass, and look damn good doing it. I still have no idea who the hell Carla Gugino is supposed to be. Scott Glenn looks to be having a rollicking good time as the wiseman. That character is gonna be ridiculous.

As with the last trailer, the latest addition to Sucker Punch's marketing campaign is flat out awesome!! So many cool shots, so many sweet scenes, and it's all set to Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks" and Silversun Pickups' "Panic Swtich". Talk about some brilliant trailer music. Trailers for Zack Snyder movies always have awesome tracks; I have the Watchmen trailer to thank for my ridiculous obsession with Muse, but, we won't talk about that again.

It's a lot of the same thing that the last trailer gave us, but, when the "thing" in question is this good, you won't hear me complaining. Sucker Punch is still my most anticipated movie for next year. I can't wait!

Trailer Trash: Sucker Punch

It's time to root through some trailers! What sort of wonderful things will be alluded to today?

With my Joseph Gordon-Levitt blog-a-thon winding to a close, it's time to get back to regular stuff. Today's trailer is for a film that doesn't come out till next year, but it is already my most anticipated!

Sucker Punch is about... you know? I actually have no clue what it's about, but, I know what it has. It has hot girls kicking ass with katanas, broadswords, and a whole ton of guns. It has dragons! It has monsters! It has Nazis. It has dragons fighting Nazis. It has mechs jumping up into the sky to pulverize some biplanes. It has zeppelins crashing to the ground in a orgasmic display of destruction! It has an enormous cave troll, wielding a mini-gun! To hell with the story! I'm there on opening night! There is a plot about a girl who wants to escape from the mental hospital that she's locked up in, but, that's inconsequential when you have CAVE TROLLS WITH MINI-GUNS!!

As with all Zach Snyder movies, he employs a cast of relative unknowns to populate his world. For this, he has Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Abbie Cornish, and Jena Malone as his ass kicking heroines, Carla Gugino as... someone, and Jon Hamm as... someone else! I don't know. Nothing's been given away so far, so I have nothing to go on.

This is the coolest trailer I have seen in a hell of a long time! I don't remember the last time a less than two minute teaser got me this excited for a film. If this is anything to go on, Sucker Punch will be one, giant maelstrom of fire, steel, and dirt! Epileptics beware! The action looks top notch, as with all of Snyder's films! Whether or not it looks this cool in the finished product remains to be seen, but, Snyder has consistently impressed. No reason to suspect he won't do it here!

Seriously! CAVE TROLLS WITH MINI-GUNS!!!!
