In Other News: The Wolverine

All hopes of the Wolverine sequel being any good have now been thrown out the window with the news that Darren Aronofsky will no longer be directing Hugh Jackman as everyone's favorite metal boned mutant. Aronofsky's reasoning behind this is that working on the project would keep him out of the country and away from his family for too long, something he wasn't willing to do.
...
Really, man? I can understand not wanting to be away from home for so long, but this was an opportunity missed. After the tidal wave of acclaim that came with Black Swan, Aronofsky's next logical move was to capitalize on said acclaim, and make a popcorn flick. At least, that was what the smart move was. Aronofsky could have kicked ass with the Wolverine character, finally giving the Marvel-verse its Batman, a dark, conflicted, brutal hero. Guess it's not to be.

Now, the film is set in Japan, so the current crisis there might have had something to do with this. Nature can be so troublesome sometimes.

No claws for this guy anymore...

Now, be honest. How much does this suck?

  1. This reminds me of something I asked during the IRON MAN 2 LAMBcast...

Does a prestige director make a quality comic book film a certainty?

Lest we forget that WOLVERINE was directed by a cat who had a best foreign film Oscar under his belt...ditto the team behind THE HULK.

It would seem as though creating an absolutely stellar comic book film requires a certain amount of alchemy that can't be quantified with a resume. After all, if in 2005 I told you that the guy who directed ZATHURA was going to be behind one of the best comic book films of all time, what would you have said?

That said, I find the news of Aronofsky jumping ship bittersweet.

Sure, it would have been amazing to see what he could have done with this tale...but perhaps it means that he'll be able to get his long desired ROBOCOP film off the ground.

  2. @Aiden: Damn it, man! If you knew you would take the news so badly, I would have refrained. You have to tell me these things.

@Hatter: I agree with you that it takes more than just a great director to make a great comic book, but, Aronofsky had A.) directed Hugh Jackman to one of his best performances, and B.) has been trying to make a comic book movie for what seems like decades. Wasn't he on tap to take over BATMAN before Nolan stepped in? Wasn't he once slotted in to do WATCHMEN? And now this? It's just getting a little ridiculous, and I know, given how he took something as potentially campy as BLACK SWAN and turned it into something marvelous, that he could have done WOLVERINE justice.

Although, if he does get his ROBOCOP remake off the ground, I won't be complaining.

  3. No Aronofsky for Wolverine pisses me off because it would have been really awesome to see what he could have done with this popcorn entertainment material. Oh well, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what's next in store for his crazy mind.
