Astounding Similarities

There's been been a lot of talk as of late, through the grapevine, about Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and the type of actor he is. Inception has finally revealed him to the world in a big way, so now the critics and bloggers and people on ET have started to rave about him as if they have been following him for his whole career. One thing that has been coming up a lot has been the comparison between Jo-Go, and the late, great, Heath Ledger. Looking over each actor's resume, that is actually a comparison founded in strong evidence. So, is Joseph Gordon-Levitt the next Heath Ledger? I'll give you a few reasons why I think he could be.

It's absolutely uncanny!

1: They were both introduced to mainstream audiences in the same movie, 10 Things I Hate About You. Ledger had the lead, so of course he got all the recognition, but Gordon-Levitt didn't do too badly afterwards either.

2: Following that hit, they both made the conscious and radical decision to be serious actors and not star in big hits all the time. Ledger dabbled in blockbuster territory with A Knights Tale and The Patriot, but then opted to do smaller films, like Monster's Ball. Gordon-Levitt wasn't even seen by the mainstream again until G.I. Joe and (500) Days of Summer last year, instead making small, indie gems like Brick, Mysterious Skin and The Lookout for a good 10 years.

3: They both had their big coming out party courtesy of Christopher Nolan. Ledger had his in The Dark Knight, and Gordon-Levitt, Inception. Both were already climbing the ladder to stardom, but they each jumped most of the rungs to land on the top with those respective films. Yes, I am aware that Gordon-Levitt was a series regular for most of the run of 3rd Rock From the Sun, but that's TV, and I don't care, and Ledger got his first Oscar nom and heaps of critical praise for Brokeback Mountain, but that film was too controversial to appeal to a good chunk of the demographic that flocked to TDK, so he wasn't as much of a household name at that point.

4: Another Christopher Nolan similarity for you. God willing, they will both play the main villain in their own installments of Nolan's Batman franchise. Ledger won the Oscar for perfecting the character of The Joker, and Gordon-Levitt looks like the clear favorite to play the green clad trickster, Edward Nigma/The Riddler in Nolan's upcoming sequel to TDK. Please let that happen! I will never ask for anything ever again is JGL is The Riddler!

5: Neither one of them let(s) stardom get to their heads. Ledger always kept a cool demeanor, and didn't just take a role because it would have paid him a lot. I mean, he followed the most profitable, non James Cameron movie ever with a Terry Gilliam project that no one saw. Gordon-Levitt is more of the same. He did Inception, and what does he have coming next? An indie film, Hesher. The both take/took roles because of the artistic merit behind them, not because of the paycheck they would be receiving.

6: They look kinda similar, so... there's that.

Well? What say you? Am I on to something or am I so far off the mark that I should just go jump off a bridge right now? Well, whatever. I think it's interesting to point out. Smiley face emoticon!

Next week, I'll show you how Zooey Deschanel and Katy Perry are actually the same person!

Ha ha ha ha ha! No!

  1. Wasn't Levitt introduced to mainstream audiences in Third Rock From the Sun? That's what I always remembered him for.

#5 isn't quite true. Hesher was made before Inception. Other than that you may be on to something.

  2. 3rd Rock doesn't count for anything.

  3. Weren't he and Ledger in 10 Things I Hate About You together as well?

It's hard for me to accept him as a grown adult that could play a character with any kind of ferocity, but then I've yet to see most of these films that everyone is talking about his excellent performances being in.

It's going to take a lot for me to get the kid from Third Rock From The Sun outta my head.

  4. Interesting observations. Let's hope JGL sticks around a bit longer.

  5. @Mike and Simon: Yes, JGL was big on 3rd Rock, but I know a lot of people that only know him for his movies, regardless of how good the show was.

@Heather: Uh, yeah. They were in 10 Things. Didn't I say that?

And yes, you need to see the movies that everyone is talking about where he is a full on adult actor. There is nothing resembling a child in his films!

@Rachel: I will drink to that!

  6. You might be on to something here Sebastian, I never thought that they look similar but after seeing the pic of them together, WOW! I respect both actors a lot. Hey, having Joseph play a villain in a Nolan film will rock, though Ledger's Joker is a giant shoes to fill.

  7. Forgot to mention. I just hope Joseph doesn't share the same fate. We've got more than our share of young, talented actors dying far too soon!

  8. Hey Sebastian, I just found your great blog this evening due to the Love & Other Drugs pre-review. So, now I would love to add my own 2 cents to your post on JGL & Ledger similarities. I noticed on your list of JGL movie reviews, you did not list Killshot. Did you see that, by any chance? It came out in Jan 09 & I swear that JGL channeled Heath's Joker from TDK. It was very surreal seeing the similarities in their performances & TDK had not been released yet when he filmed Killshot, so I know he wasn't copying him. Though the movie wasn't great, it was good, & the other actors did a fair job with the exception of Mickey Rourke who was great in this. But the real thrill was watching JGL portray Richie, the young psychopathic killer. I was a huge Ledger fan too, & have followed both of their careers, Ledger since the late 90's with Roar & JGL with Angels in the Outfield in the mid 90's. I know he was only a child in that movie, but he was incredible in it & he touched my heart in such a big way, I totally predicted that he would be a major A-lister some day. & here we are finally seeing it happen. Very exciting.
