Hopped Up

Strange as it might be to hear coming from the... fingers of a person with somewhat refined taste in film, the fact remains that I dig the kind of movies that Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor make. Though they have their names on some stinkers, I thought Crank was a fun, if formulaic flick. Crank 2, on the other hand, was the single biggest "fuck you" to mainstream action movies ever. Pretty much every single stupid thing you could imagine being packed into an action movie, Crank 2 had it. And I loved every single ridiculous inch of it. So, when I heard that Neveldine/Taylor were taking on the derided Ghost Rider franchise, my ears went all perky. Ghost Rider is the kind of comic book character that these guys were made for, totally insane and over the top. Now, the first Ghost Rider movie is one of the worst comic book films I've ever seen, so there wasn't much in the way of expectations for this one. That being said, there are elements to enjoy here. They are few and far between, and even though Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance doesn't quite get a recommendation from me, it does so in a very half hearted manner.

This is me on a good day!

Being A Sophomore And All...

So, College: Round 2 has started. What does this mean?

Well...

1. I Have A Car! And that means I'll be able to get to the theatre a lot more. So, while I only saw three new releases last year when I wasn't on a break, I will be able to be much better at keeping up with the trends, and the reviews will come fast and furious. So, I will see Contagion. I will see Moneyball. I will see The Ides of March, Immortals, and Drive. Keep you posted.

2. French! One of the requirements for my Intermediate French class is to see one film a week. One French film, to be precise. Lucky for me, the teacher never said what sort of film. So, expect reviews of classic art house flicks, but also expect reviews of guilty pleasures and French action films. Ever wanted to know what I though of Brotherhood of the Wolf? You'll find out soon enough.

3. Keeping My Expectations About Myself in Check! Some of you may remember how, earlier in the year, I tried to do the whole posting everyday thing. Well, that proved to be too much of a hassle, but it taught me a valuable lesson: I need to calm down! So, you won't be seeing posts every day. Instead, I'm going to try and post things that are worth it. So, reviews, articles, lists, and things of that nature. I'm going to bring According to the Movies back at some point. I just need to think of lessons. Also, this term, I'm not acting in a production, but directing one, which is going to eat up a huge chunk of my time. Quality over quantity is the name of the game now. Play with me?

Looking forward to it folks. Also, nothing's been set in stone, but I'm working on a certain something that will drop in January. Hint: It involves a little town in Utah.

You're excited now, aren't ya!

I know he is!

Kick Some...

So, let's talk about superheroes. They are cool, calculating, stylish, and can kick your ass. So, why they do they always need to be so serious? I mean, come on. The stories of superheroes are some of the cheesiest in the biz, so why do they need to be so god damn morose about it? Well, fear not, because there's a new kid on the block, one that fully knows how ridiculous the whole caped crusader thing is, and seeks to knock it flat on its' face. Kick-Ass is a parody, of sorts, about everything superhero that sees normal people donning costumes and fighting crime. It's Watchmen, only without the meaning, subtlety, or any level of maturity what so ever. Kick-Ass is vulgar, depraved, senseless, and, on occasion, kind of sadistic! It's awesome!
