2010: The Retrospect: Top 10 Best Movies of the Year

This is it!

We've come to the end. Over the past week and a half, Films From the Supermassive Black Hole has covered everything worth covering about the year that was, from posters, to trailers, to lines. It wasn't the best year there ever was, but, though it was a rare occurrence, everyone found something to enjoy at the movies this year. It was a good year, all in all, so before we finally bid goodbye, I'd like to take the time to make a toast.

Raise your glasses.

To 2010, and the movies it gave us. To the good and the bad. To the socially inept jackasses getting rich. To an epic about dream invasion. To a ballerina slowly losing her mind. To vampire love. To western revenge. To fighters making a comeback. To A-Teams, bank robbers, and foul mouthed superheroes. To rockstars, serial killers, and valiant warriors. To stuttering kings and sentient toys. To wizards. To benders. To lovers. To haters. To rocks. To aliens. To utopias. To computer programs. To lesbian moms. To The Expendables. To video games. To everything else in between. To film!

And, now, the time has come! Here it is, the end all, be all. The definitive list of the year. Here are Films From the Supermassive Black Hole's Top 10 Movies of 2010!

Jab, Jab, Uppercut, KO!!

Gotta love the inspirational sports flick, don't ya? I mean, they're just so uplifting, right? An underdog rises to the top with the help of his loved ones, deals with issues along the way, almost loses everything in the final hour, and then returns a new man and defeats the defending champ, who is a total dick. It's nice to know that this tried and true formula hasn't been done to death and that all these elements haven't at all become cliches.
...
Ha ha ha ha ha! Had you going there for a second, didn't I? No, for real though, it's actually kinda scary how religiously sports films follow the same formula! ATTENTION FILM MAKERS!!! YOUR FILM IS NOT GOING TO EVER MATCH ROCKY!!! STOP TRYING!!! I will say this though. If a film can take the cliches but do them well and layer them on top of other things like good acting and some cool stylistic choices, then I'll turn a blind eye. The Fighter is such a film. Put simply, The Fighter is one of the best examples of this genre since Rocky introduced it to us. Not only does it handle the tried and true story of an underdogs meteoric rise to the top, but it adds to it with a harrowing depiction of drug addiction and a family on the verge of exploding. That, and some of the coolest boxing scenes to come around in a long while. Oh, and some stupendous acting. You'll like this one, methinks.

INSPIRATION! DOWN YOUR THROAT! EAT IT UP! ENJOY!

Trailer Trash: The Fighter

It's time to root through some trailers. What sorts of wonderful things will be alluded to today?

Gotta love the uplifting sports movie, don't ya? You gotta especially love the ones that feature a once mighty giant returning from obscurity. Those stories are always riveting, aren't they! Too bad they are all mired by cliche and over exaggeration, but, who cares! The underdog wins, damn it!

The Fighter traces the ascent of Mickey Ward, a lowly Bostonian who sweeps streets by day, pounds faces by night! He is trained by his cracked out brother, Dicky Eklund. When Dicky becomes too much a liability, Mickey leaves him behind as he gains fame! There's a love interest and a promise of redemption!

Mark Wahlberg is getting a lot of Oscar buzz for his portrayal of Mickey! He looks ready to impress, especially since he has gotten consistently better as of late. The real stand out looks to be Christian Bale as Dicky! Bale is almost at Machinist levels of thin for this film, having lost all his beef to convincingly play a crackhead! If Bale is anywhere near as good as we know he can be, and Oscar nom is definitely incoming! Amy Adams is the love interest. Whatever.

Ok, the film. Not interested. Sure, Wahlberg and Christian look ready to for Oscar gold, but this just looks like ripoff of every other sports film of its kind! There's definite shades of Rocky, and especially of The Wrestler in this trailer. If the movie can bring enough to the table to warrant a look, fantastic! But, it just looks to be treading old ground. SHENANIGANS!!
