The FITS Awards: 2010

So, I realize that the summer season has a good two weeks left to go, but, I'm already at college, and the nearest theatre requires catching a shuttle that only runs once on Wednesday, and once on Saturday. Also, I'm making new friends and shit like that. Movies can wait for a little bit. So, I'm presenting my Fun In The Sun Awards a little early this year, as summer, for all intents and purposes, is over for me. Like last year, we have a bunch of categories, all a part of the Best and Worst type, with your usual Best/Worst Film, Action, Comedy, Direction, Fun, Sequel, New Franchise, etc. and so forth. So, with out further ado, let's go!

Before we start the ceremony, let's review the summer as a whole. I said in my Iron Man 2 review that I had high hopes for the summer. Those hopes were not realized. Movie goers were consistently disappointed with the offerings at the theatre this year. For every Inception or Toy Story 3, we had a Jonah Hex, or a The Last Airbender, or a Salt, or a Robin Hood to go with it. Granted, the best films of the summer were so friggin' good that it is not a total waste, but, compared to the last two summers, which offered plenty of top tier films, Summer 2010 was lacking.

Alright then! Let's kick this off!

Defined As When the Moon Passes Over the Sun

Ok, let me confess something! I have no idea how to write this review of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Everything I say will have zero effect on formulating your opinion of this franchise. But, you have to start somewhere, right? Let me say this. I walked out of Eclipse with a slightly more enthusiastic pop in my step then there had been with the other Twilight movies. That is to say, there was a pop in my step. Don't get me wrong, Eclipse is still a pretty painful, at times excruciating, film to sit through. But, the improvements here are noticeable enough that the anguish is lessened significantly!

Ramp It Up!

Is there such a thing as hope? Maybe. I think with a director who actually gets the whole vampire genre, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse might be able to offer enough for people like me as well as appealing to all those fangirls out there. It appears that David Slade is bringing some of his 30 Days of Night experience to the project, and all I can say is, THANK GOD!! Yes, Twilight is romantic, emo bullshit, but that doesn't mean it can't be mature, romantic, emo bullshit. Just because it's aimed at teenage girls doesn't mean elements that us other, sane people enjoy can't be included. Watch the trailer down at the bottom, then compare the footage there to this scene for 30 Days of Night. There are some similarities, to be sure. I know it's pointless to hope that Eclipse will actually be good, but maybe it will be adequate enough to get a grade higher then a D from me. We'll see in June.

Disclaimer: This clip is bloody as hell! You have been warned.
